Target Words:

  • share
  • bear
  • care
  • tear

Materials:

  • Teddy bear
  • Share the Bear song (see below - to the tune of Skip to My Lou)

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will share a bear and practice saying words that rhyme with share.

Practice the skill within an activity

Share the Bear game

  • Have the children sit in a circle and sing the Share the Bear song (see below) as the bear is passed around the circle.
  • Point out the words within the song that rhyme (share, bear, care) and have the children emphasize those words by singing them louder than any other word in the song.
  • When the song ends, the child holding the bear gets to choose someone to share the bear with.
  • When the child has chosen someone to share the bear with, have the children say, "Take care of the bear so it does not tear."
  • Repeat the activity, and give several children the opportunity to share the bear.

Game variation

  • Sing the song again, and have the children jump in the air every time they hear the rhyming words (share, bear, care).

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with thumb
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (share, bear, care, tear).
    • Have the children think of things that rhyme with share that they could share with the bear (e.g., a pear, a chair).
    • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
      • "How about pear?  Does pear rhyme with share?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme) "Could you share a pear with a bear?"
      • "Do chair and share rhyme?" (Nod your head yes) "Could you share a chair with a bear?"
  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. share, bear).
    • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., care, tear; wear, there; fair, cat; flair, mare; hair, dare; rare, hot; stare, glare).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.
