The children will play a game where they aim and toss a beanbag at things that rhyme with aim and practice saying words that rhyme with aim.

Literacy Activities
The Aim Game

  • Explain to the children that they are going to aim and toss a beanbag only at pictures of things that rhyme with aim (e.g., game, frame). 
  • Identify the picture cards together, emphasizing the pictures that rhyme with aim and attach the picture cards to the wall.
  • Have the children come up one at a time and name where they will aim (e.g., "I want to aim for the frame!")  
  • Have the children throw a beanbag at the picture card they chose as the other children repeat the cheer, "Aim for things that rhyme with aim!"
    • If the child hits the picture card he or she targeted, have the other children say, "Great aim! You hit the frame!"
    • If the child hits a non-rhyming picture card, have him or her try one more time to "Aim for the frame."
  • Repeat until all the children have had a turn.

More Practice 
Rhyming Chant

  • Have the children march and chant the rhyming words they heard in the activity together, "Aim for the frame. Aim for the game. Aim for the flame."
  • After a couple of repetitions, ask the children which words rhyme with aim (support as needed).
  • Lead the children in pointing up each time they say a word that rhymes with aim as they march and chant with you again.  

Produce words that rhyme with aim

  • Remind the children of the words they played with (aim, game, flame, frame).
  • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with aim (support as needed).

Recognize and produce words that rhyme with aim.


  • Picture cards 
  • Beanbag or soft toy

Activity: The Aim Game

  • Identify the picture cards  with your child, pointing out the cards that rhyme with aim
  • Attach the cards to a wall and explain to your child that you will take turns throwing a beanbag/soft toy at pictures that rhyme with aim
  • Before throwing the beanbag/soft toy, have your child name what he or she wants to aim for (e.g., “I want to aim for the frame!”).
  • Congratulate each other when the desired picture card is hit by saying, “Great aim! You hit the frame!” 
  • After all of the picture cards that rhyme with aim have been hit, take the cards off the wall together.
  • Have your child sort the cards into piles of things that do and do not rhyme with aim.
