Far Star

Objective

Recognize words that rhyme with star (e.g., do star and far rhyme?) and produce rhyme words (e.g., think of a word that rhymes with star). Point to words in a target text to demonstrate print awareness.

Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • far
  • star
  • car
  • jar

Materials:

  • Star graphics (see below - cut out and place around the room)
  • A jar
  • The Far Star target text (see below)

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will look for stars to put in a jar and practice saying words that rhyme with star.

Practice the skill within an activity

Far Star

  • Ask the children to listen for words that rhyme with star as you read The Far Star story (see below).
  • Choose a few children to go find a star graphic (see below) while pretending to drive a car and have the remaining children chant, "Drive a car to the star!"
  • After each child in that group has found a star, have all the children say, "Put the star in the jar!"
  • Invite that group of children to put the stars around the room again while the rest of the class closes their eyes and chants, "Hide the star near or far!"
  • Repeat the activity so that all the children have a turn to find a star and put it in the jar.
  • Ask the children what words they heard in the activity rhyme with star: car, jar, far.

Apply the skill

Read a predictable, repetitive target text to the children to support print awareness (see text below)

  • Display The Far Star target text large enough for children to easily see.
  • Read the text to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Read the text again and have the children point to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Allow the children to shadow read by repeating predictable phrases while you read the text again.
  • Ask the children which words in the text rhyme with star: car, jar, far.

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with star
  • Remind the children of the words they played with (star, far, car, jar).
  • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with star (bar, par, tar).
  • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with star.*
  • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
    • "How about char?  Does char rhyme with star?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
    • "Do scar and star rhyme?" (Nod your head yes) *Nonsense words can be used (e.g., dar, har, zar).

Recognize rhyming words

  • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. star, far).
  • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
  • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., car, jar; tar, par; scar, cat; spar, bar; char, truck; ajar, far).
  • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words
