Target Words:

  • car
  • jar
  • star

Materials:

  • Star graphics (see below - one as jar label and enough for half of the children to have one)
  • Car graphics or toy cars (see below - one as jar label and enough for half of the children to have one)
  • 2 jars (put a star graphic on one jar and a car graphic on the other jar)
  • Stars and Cars song lyrics (see below)
  • Chart paper
  • Marker

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will find stars and cars to put in jars and practice saying words that rhyme with jar.

Practice the skill within an activity

Look for stars and cars

  • Before the activity, put the star and car graphics (see below) around the room
  • Have the children sit in a group and teach them the Stars and Cars song (see below).
  • Choose one child at a time to look around the room for a star graphic or a car graphic (or toy).
  • While the child is looking for a star or car, have the children sing the Stars and Cars song.
  • When the child finds a star or car, have him or her bring it back to the group.
  • Ask the child, "Does the star/car go in the star/car jar?"
    • Have the child respond by saying, "Yes! The star/car goes in the star/car jar!"
  • Occasionally present the wrong option (i.e.; Does the star go in the car jar?)
    • Have the child respond by saying, "No! The star goes in the star jar!" or "No! The car goes in the car jar!"
  • Ask the children to share what words they heard in the activity that rhyme with jar.

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with jar
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (star, car, jar).
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with jar (par, far, char).
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with jar.
    • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
      • "How about bar?  Does bar rhyme with jar?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
      • "Do scar and jar rhyme?" (Nod your head yes)

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words

  • Tap out sounds in words
    • Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning), and toes (end) then clap to say the whole word (e.g. /h/ tap head, /um/ tap toes = hum clap hands)
      • /j/ /ar/ = jar
      • /st/ /ar/ = star
      • /c/ /ar/ = car
      • /f/ /ar/= far
  • Point out that all the words rhyme with jar.

    • Stars and cars, stars and cars,
    • Stars for a star jar, cars for a car jar,
    • Stars and cars, stars and cars.
  • Have your child look for the car and star graphics you hid as you sing the Stars and Cars song together.

  • After both the star and the car have been found, have your child hide the graphics for you to find while you sing the Stars and Cars song together.
  • Have fun taking turns saying words that rhyme with jar (nonsense words count, too!).
