Target Words:

  • trash
  • smash
  • splash

Materials:

  • Small paper cups
  • Large trash bag or trash can
  • Splash the Trash target text

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will splash and smash the trash and practice saying words that rhyme with splash.

Practice the skill within an activity

Splash Trash

  • Put a little bit of water in small paper cups and place them out throughout the class.
  • Take turns pouring the water from the cups into the trash bag or trashcan.
  • As the water falls onto the trash, have the children chant, "Splash! Splash! Splash the trash!"
  • After the children splash the trash bag or trashcan, show them how to smash their paper cups,
  • As they smash their cups, have the children chant, "Smash! Smash! Smash the trash!" then put the cups into the trash.
  • Let the children splash the trash and then smash a cup to put in the trash several times.
  • Ask the children to share the words they heard in the activity that rhyme with splash: trash, smash

Apply the skill

Read a predictable, repetitive target text to the children to support print awareness (see text below)

  • Display the Splash the Trash target text large enough for children to easily see.
  • Read the text to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Read the text again and have the children point to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Allow the children to shadow read by repeating predictable phrases while you read the text again.
  • To extend the activity, read the text again, adding appropriate actions (optional).
  • Ask the children which words in the text rhyme with splash: trash, smash.

Practice rhyming

  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. splash, smash).
    • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., trash, sash; gash, lash; cash, cat; hash, mash; dash, rash; ash, truck; stash, crash).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words

  • March and say the sounds in words
    • Tell the children that they will practice saying words that rhyme with splash in a fun way.
    • Point out that cash rhymes with splash.
    • Have the children march and say the initial and rhyme sounds of the word cash as follows:
      • say /c/ (march right)
      • say /ash/ (march left)
      • jump with both feet and say cash to blend the sounds into the whole word
    • Repeat with other words that rhyme with splash (e.g. sash, trash, mash, dash)
