Target Words:

  • stash
  • trash
  • bash
  • clash
  • dash
  • smash

Materials:

  • Crumpled newspaper pieces (spread across floor)
  • 1 trash can

Overview
Tell the children that they will stash and smash the trash and practice saying words that rhyme with trash.

Literacy Activities
Stash the trash

  • Teach children the Stash the Trash song (to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
  • Practice the song marching in place and listening for the words that rhyme with trash then ask the children what rhyming words they heard.
  • Sing the song and march around the room as everyone helps clean up the trash around the classroom.

More Practice
Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with trash
    • Ask the children to make up nonsense words that rhyme with trash (e.g., fash, jash, pash, tash). Write the nonsense words on the board for them.
    • Sing the Stash the Trash song again as a class, substituting the nonsense words for the words that rhyme with trash that were originally in the song.
  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. stash, trash).
    • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., dash, smash; gash, cash; rash, cat; hash, sash; lash, splash; crash, truck; mash, clash).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words

  • Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning), and toes (end) then clap to say the whole word (e.g. /tr/ tap head, /ash/ tap toes = trash clap hands)
    • /c/ /ash/ = cash
    • /d/ /ash/ = dash
    • /s/ /ash/ = sash
    • /m/ /ash/= mash
