Tell the children that they will make a splash as they smash trash and that they will think of words that rhyme with splash, such as cash, bash, dash, and trash.

Smash Trash and Make a Splash

• Pour a small amount of water in paper cups and place them on a tray. 
• Let the children take a sip, smash the cup, make a splash, and chant, "Smash and splash! Smash and splash in the trash! Smash and splash!”
• Have the children crash and bash two cups together to make a splash and say, “Crash and bash to splash.”
• Let the children smash their paper cups, stash them in the trash, and chant, "Smash! Smash! Smash the trash!" 
• Comment on words that rhyme: bash, smash, crash, clash, and splash rhyme

Dash around to smash trash

• Scatter trash (e.g., egg cartons, cardboard boxes) and let the children dash around to smash the trash and stash the trash in the trash.
• Chant, “Smash! Smash! Smash the trash! Smash the trash in the trash!”
• Ask the children if smash and bash rhyme and nod to indicate that they do.
• Ask the children to think of a word that rhymes with trash, such as splash, dash, flash, and crash. 

Read a text to the children

• Display the Splash the Trash target text (see below) large enough for children to easily see.
• Read the text to the children and point to each word in left-to-right sequence.
• Read the text again and invite the children to repeat the phrases.
• Ask the children to think of a word that rhymes with splash and provide suggestions as needed.

Recognize rhyming words

• Ask the children to show thumbs up if two words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
  • Splash, smash  (shake head yes)
  • Trash, sash (shake head yes)
  • Bash, truck (prompt by shaking head no)
  • Trash, smash (shake head yes)

March and make words  

• Have the children blend word parts into whole words:
  • March right and say the beginning sound 
  • March left and say the -ash ending 
  • Put two feet together and say the word. 
    • c + ash  = cash
    • s + ash = sash
    • m + ash = mash
    • d + ash = dash
    • tr + ash = trash
