Overview
The children will pretend to be sheep riding in a jeep as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with jeep, such as sheep, sleep, beep, and creep.

Literacy Activities

  • Read Sheep in a Jeep by Nancy Shaw (optional) 
  • Set up chairs to be a pretend jeep, and help the children act out the story using the outline below:
Say: Suggested Action:
Beep, beep, here come the sheep!  Get in the jeep and say, “Sheep in the jeep!” 
 
The sheep go “beep, beep” in the jeep.  Pretend to honk a horn and say, “Beep, beep! Here come the sheep!” 
The sheep can sleep.  Make yawning noises and say, “Sheep need to sleep.”
The sheep can sleep in the jeep.  Pretend to be asleep. 
Be silent and don’t make a peep.  Be silent and make the “shh” sign by bringing the index finger to the mouth.
The sheep are asleep in the jeep!  Pretend to snore. 
Wake up, sheep! Pretend to wake up and say, “Not asleep! Not asleep!” 
Creep. Creep. The hill is steep.  Say “Creep, creep.”
Oh no! The jeep is going down the hill that is steep!  Say “Oh no, the hill is steep! Let’s leap out of the jeep!” 
Crash! The jeep is in a heap.  Make crashing noises. 
The sheep sweep up the jeep.  Pretend to sweep pieces of the jeep and say, “Sweep the jeep!” 
Next time, sheep, do not sleep in the jeep!  Say, “No sleep, sheep!” 

More Practice
Identify rhyme words in a story

  • Ask a few children to help retell the story, supporting as needed by asking questions that use words that rhyme with jeep (e.g., What did the sheep ride in? A jeep. Why did the jeep go down the hill? It was steep.).
  • Invite the other children to say “beep!” every time they hear a word that rhymes with jeep.

Activity: Sheep in a Jeep

  • With your child, make up a story about sheep, using as many -eep words as possible (e.g., sheep, jeep, sleep, creep, leap, beep, peep, asleep, keep, weep), and write down the story.
  • When you and your child have finished writing the story, read it out loud to your child, and have him or her act out the words that rhyme with jeep when you say them (e.g., The sheep [child makes a sheep sound] got in the jeep [child pretends to get in the jeep].
