Overview
The children will play with a squid as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with kid, such as squid, hid, lid, and slid

Literacy Activity

  • Write the following sentences on the board:
    • The kid with a squid hid.
    • The kid with a squid slid.
    • The kid with a squid opened the lid.
    • The kid hid the squid.
  • Give each child a picture of a squid.
  • Read each of the sentences individually on the board, and have the children do the action with the squid.
  • Choose a child to perform an action for the class, and whisper the action in his or her ear.
  • As he or she performs the action, ask the children, “What did the kid do with the squid?”
  • Have the other children answer by saying, “The kid with the squid ___.” (e.g., hid)
  • When they guess correctly, say to the child who performed the action, “Get rid of the squid under the lid!” and have him or her place the squid in the container under the lid.
  • Repeat until all the children have had a turn to perform an action and return their squids to the container under the lid.

More Practice

  • Help the children make a list of words that rhyme with kid
  • Read the list together, and as each rhyme word is repeated, have the children wiggle their arms like squids.
  • Review the list several times together.
