Target Words:

  • pig
  • wig
  • jig
  • rig

Materials:

  • Pig Wig Jig song
  • Wig made of paper, yarn, or other material

Overview
The children will sing a song about a pig wearing a wig as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with wig, such as pig and jig

Literacy Activity

  • Sing the Pig Wig Jig song slowly.
  • Invite a child to be the pig in a wig and to stand in the middle of the circle.
  • Have the remainder of the children slowly jog in a circle while you sing the song, and invite the children to sing along.
  • Choose a second child to join the pig in a wig in the middle of the circle and do a jig while everybody sings the chorus.
  • Provide assistance to the children by modeling various dance moves (e.g., spinning in place, twisting, marching in place).
  • Repeat the song as desired, choosing two more children to replace those already in the center of the circle.

More Practice

  • Model identifying words pairs rhyming with pig for the children (e.g., Say, “Pig and wig rhyme. Pig and jig rhyme. Do pig and rig rhyme?”) and then have the children determine which pairs rhyme.
  • Have all the children stand in place and say different pairs of words out loud for the children to hear, some words rhyming with pig and some non-rhyming words.
  • Have the children do a little jig when they hear a rhyming word pair (e.g., pig and big) and freeze when they hear a non-rhyming word pair (e.g., pig and tag).
