State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will take a trip on an imaginary ship as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with trip, such as flip, dip, ship, tip, and drip

Literacy Activities

Take a trip on an imaginary ship

  • Designate a spot in the room to be an imaginary ship 
  • Take a trip on the ship by stating -ip words and engage in the actions: 
    • Skip. Skip to the ship
    • Grip on. Grip onto the ship.
    • Trip. Pretend to trip getting on the ship
    • Zip. Zip along with a fast zig zag motion
    • Tip. Tip your body to one side as the ship tips
    • Rip. Wave the sail (an old cloth) and rip it to be the wind that rips the sail 
    • Slip. Pretend to slip
    • Flip. Flip in a back and forth motion as the ship flips
    • Dip. Dip down with knees bent.  
    • Drip. Drip (sprinkle) drops on water as the ship drips
  • Comment on how the -ip words rhyme (e.g., ship and dip rhyme)

Take a Trip on a Pretend Ship (optional)

  • Point out that a large box or chair or table turned upside down is a ship
  • Make -ip comments and actions
    • Skip. Skip to the ship.
    • Don’t slip, don’t trip. Do not slip or trip getting on the ship
    • Get on the ship. Take turns getting on the ship 
    • Zip. Move the ship a little as it zips along
    • Tip and flip. Jiggle the ship a little to make it tip back and forth
    • Whip. Whip the sail (cloth) around and rip the sail
    • Dip. Bend or slouch down to pretend that the ship dips down.
    • Drip. Sprinkle a little water on the ship.
  • State that these words rhyme: tip, ship, rip, slip, trip, dip, drip, zip.

Read a text with -ip rhyming words

  • Read or chant rhyme texts (see below) to the children:
    • Skip to a Ship target text   
    • Take a Ship Trip target text
  • Have the children make gestures or actions that fit the text

Read the rhyme text

  • Read the A Pretend Ship Trip target text to the children and have the children do corresponding actions as the text is read. 
  • Read the text again and ask the children if certain -ip words (e.g., tip, drip) rhyme with ship.

Objective:

Materials:

  • Word cards 

Activity: Pretend Ship Trip 

  • Talk to your child about how fun it would be to take a trip on a ship. 
  • Go to the couch or the table and pretend you are on a ship. 
  • Take turns choosing an action word card, reading it for your child, and then doing that action like you are on a ship. 
  • As you perform each action, say what you are doing out loud (e.g., We slip on the ship!). 
  • Sing the A Ship Trip song together with your child and do the corresponding actions as you sing.
