Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with six (e.g., "Do chicks and six rhyme?) and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with six.").

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will hear a story about the chicks and their tricks and hear and say words that rhyme with six, such as fix, sticks, tricks, bricks, kicks, and chicks.
Practice the skill within an activity
- Six Chicks
- Tell the story below while the children act it out.
- Afterward, ask the children to say the words they heard in the activity that rhyme with six.

- Hop like chicks
- Have the children hop around the room like little chicks.
- Say words out loud for the children to hear, with more words rhyming with six and less non-rhyming words.
- Tell the children to hop high in the air whenever they hear a word said that rhymes with six, reinforcing their correct responses.
- Repeat as many times as desired.
Apply the skill
- Practice rhyming
- Remind the children of the words they played with (chicks, kicks, six, bricks).
- Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with six (mix, fix, licks).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with six.
- If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
- "How about chicks? Does chicks rhyme with six?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
- "Do bricks and six rhyme?" (Nod your head yes)
- Recognize words that do and do not rhyme using pictures (see graphics below)
- Lay out two pictures of words that end in -ix (e.g., bricks, sticks) and one picture that does not end in -ix (e.g., cat).
- State all possible word pairs and let the children help you identify the picture that does not rhyme.
- Repeat with other sets of pictures:
- Sticks, Felix, ball
- Bricks, six, pot
- Kicks, chicks, goat
- Felix, six, bird
SEEL At Home
Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with six (e.g., "Do chicks and six rhyme?) and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with six.").
Materials
- Six Chicks story (see below)
Activity: Six Little Chicks and Sticks
- Read the Six Chicks (see below) to your child, emphasizing the words that rhyme with six.
- Chant together, "Six chicks in a house of bricks!" and hop around like the chicks in the story.
- Go outside with your child to find six fallen sticks or find six things that look like sticks from around the house (e.g., straws, pencils).
- Have fun taking turns putting sticks on a pile and saying words that rhyme with six.
- Then try saying words that rhyme with six as you pretend you are chicks and use your thumb and first finger to "peck" at and pick up the six sticks.
- Repeat as many times as desired.
