Objective

Recognize words that rhyme with cow (e.g., "Do cow and chow rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with cow."). Point to words in a target text to demonstrate print awareness

Materials:

  • Toy cow or cow graphic (see below)
  • Felt or green paper to serve as grass
  • Toy plow or tractor or plow graphic (see below)
  • Cow Chow target text (see below)

State and model the objective 
Tell the children that they will play a game with a cow and hear and say words that rhyme with cow.

Practice the skill within an activity

Give a cow some chow

  • Show the children the toy cow or cow graphic (see below) and tell them that the cow is hungry for chow (explain that chow is another word for food).
  • Ask the children about their favorite kind of chow. 
  • Show the children green paper or felt and tell them it is grass – a kind of chow for a cow.
  • Show the children a toy plow or plow graphic (see below) and explain that farmers use a plow to plant seeds to make chow (grass or hay) for cows to eat. 
  • Demonstrate how to plow the chow (green paper or felt) by using scissors to cut off a piece of the green paper or felt.
  • Have the children take turns pretending to plow the chow and then feed it to the cow.
  • Ask the children which words they heard in the activity that rhyme with cow.

Apply the skill 

Read a predictive, repetitive target text to the children to support print awareness (see text below)

  • Display the target text Cow Chow large enough for children to easily see.
  • Read the text to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Read the text again and have the children point to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Allow the children to shadow read by repeating predictable phrases while you read the text again. 
  • Ask the children which words in the text rhyme with cow. 

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with cow
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (cow, chow, plow).
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with cow (bow, how, now, wow).  
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with cow. 
    • If a child doesn’t respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:  
      • “How about chow?  Does chow rhyme with cow?” (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme) 
      • “Do plow and cow rhyme?” (Nod your head yes)
  • Recognize rhyming words 
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. cow, chow). 
    • Ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and their thumbs down if the words do not rhyme. 
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., bow, now; plow, saw; now, cow; wow, float; vow, blue). 
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words. 

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words 

  • March and say the sounds in words 
    • Tell the children that they will practice saying words that rhyme with cow in fun ways.
    • Have the children march and say the beginning and ending sound of the word cow: 
      • Segment sounds: say /c/ (march right), say /ow/ (march left) 
      • Blend sounds: jump with both feet and say cow to blend the sounds into a word. 
      • Repeat with other words that rhyme with cow (e.g., chow, bow, now, wow, plow, etc.).

Objective

Materials

  • Toy cow or cow graphic (see below)
  • Pretend food for the cow (e.g., bits of paper, cereal, etc.)
  • A bowl to hold the food

Activity: Cow Chow

  • Remind your child that chow means food.
  • Show your child the toy cow or cow graphic (below) and explain that you are going to make chow for the cow to eat.  
  • Gather together some treats or pretend treats (e.g., bits of paper, cereal) from around the house to make chow for the cow.
  • Put each treat and/or pretend treat into a bowl and say, "Now ____ is in the chow. Wow!" 
  • Pretend to feed some chow to the cow, emphasizing the –ow ending of the –ow words as they are said.
  • Have your child tell you which words, used in the activity, rhyme with cow (e.g., cow, chow, wow, now).
  • See how many words that rhyme with cow you and your child can think of (allow made-up words).
  • Repeat as desired.
