State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will look for a frog in the bog and that they will play with words that rhyme with frog, such as bog, log, dog, and hog

Literacy Activities
Look for a frog in the bog

  • Tell the children that they will look for a frog in the bog.
  • Put the logs (see below) in the bog (i.e., put the log pictures on the green paper) and hide one animal picture card (see below) under each log.
  • Have the children take turns flipping a log over.
  • Each time a picture is identified, say, “There’s a ____ in the bog!”
  • When a child finds the frog, say “We found the frog in the bog!”
  • Help the children think of words that rhyme with frog (e.g., log, bog, dog, hog).

Act out -og animals

  • Write the names of different -og animals on the board (e.g., dog, hog, frog).
  • Help the children choose an action for each animal (e.g., snort for the hog, bark for the dog, hop for the frog).
  • Point to one of the animal names on the board and say, “The ___ is in the bog!”
  • Have the children do the corresponding action.

Produce and recognize -og rhyming words

  • List -og words and point out the -og endings.
  • Remind the children of words that rhyme with frog (e.g., bog, hog, log, dog).
  • Ask the children to think of words that rhyme with frog, and provide some suggestions.
  • Ask the children if two words rhyme.
  • If the words rhyme (e.g., frog and dog), nod and say, "Frog and dog rhyme,” but if the words don’t rhyme (e.g., frog and tree), say, “Frog and tree don’t rhyme!”

Blend and segment rhyme words

  • Segment -og rhyme words into initial consonant + ending (e.g., b + og) and ask, “What did I say?”
  • Segment words into phonemes (e.g., b + o + g) and ask, “What word did I say?”
  • Review -og words and their sounds (e.g., Look at the word dog. The first sound is /d/, the final sound is /g/, and the vowel sound in the middle is /o/.).
  • Have the children say each sound with you, and then say the word (e.g., d + o + g, dog).
