Literacy Activities

Pick blooms and place them in rooms

  • Explain that when flowers first open up, they bloom, and that sometimes a flower is called a bloom; share a video of a flower blooming (optional).
  • Have the children pretend to be flowers that bloom by putting their hands on their faces, and then slowly stretching their hands and arms out wide.
  • Tape the room labels (see below) to four different places in the room and tell the children that each sign represents a different room.
  • Have the children take the flower images (see below) and zoom from room to room, placing a flower bloom in each room.
  • Ask the children to take turns saying a word they heard in the activity that rhymes with bloom

Read target words/patterns to the children

  • Read the Bloom in a Room target text (see below) to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
  • Read the text again and have the children point to each word in sequence.

Practice rhyming

  • Remind the children of the words they played with (zoom, bloom, room).
  • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with zoom.
  • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
    • "How about boom? Does boom rhyme with zoom?” (Nod your head yes.)
    • "Do room and zoom rhyme?" (Nod your head yes)

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words

Have the children march and say the beginning and ending sound of the word zoom

  • Segment sounds: say /z/ (march right), say /oo/ (march left), say /m/ (march right)
  • Blend sounds: jump with both feet and say zoom to blend the sounds into a word
  • Repeat with other words that rhyme with zoom (e.g.  room, boom, doom, etc.)
