- Book: Ducks Go Vroom by Jane Kohuth (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will make cars go zoom, vroom, and boom as they hear and say words that rhyme with zoom.
Literacy Activities
Go places in a car that goes zoom
- Read the book Ducks Go Vroom, by Jane Kohuth, to the children (optional).
- Have the children race toy cars or car images (see below) on a table and make the cars zoom, vroom, and go boom (crash).
- Have the children make up racing and crashing sounds that rhyme with zoom (e.g. sha-boom, ka-boom, vroom, etc.); write the new words down.
- Invite the children to take turns saying a word they heard in the activity that rhymes with zoom as they put their cars away.
Read the target text to the children
- Read the Zoom and Boom target text (see below) to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
- Read the text again and have the children point to each word in sequence.
Practice rhyming
- Remind the children of the words they played with (zoom, boom, room).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with zoom.
- If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him or her an option:
- "How about boom?" “Does boom rhyme with zoom?” (Nod your head yes).
- "Do room and zoom rhyme?" (Nod your head yes).
