Tell the children that they will make cars go zoom, vroom, and boom as they hear and say words that rhyme with zoom.

Literacy Activities

Go places in a car that goes zoom

• Read the book Ducks Go Vroom, by Jane Kohuth, to the children (optional).
• Have the children race toy cars or car images (see below) on a table and make the cars zoom, vroom, and go boom (crash). 
• Have the children make up racing and crashing sounds that rhyme with zoom (e.g. sha-boom, ka-boom, vroom, etc.); write the new words down.  
• Invite the children to take turns saying a word they heard in the activity that rhymes with zoom as they put their cars away.

Read the target text to the children

• Read the Zoom and Boom target text (see below) to the children, pointing to each word in left to right sequence.
• Read the text again and have the children point to each word in sequence.

Practice rhyming

• Remind the children of the words they played with (zoom, boom, room).
• Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with zoom.
• If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him or her an option:  
  • "How about boom?" “Does boom rhyme with zoom?” (Nod your head yes).
  • "Do room and zoom rhyme?" (Nod your head yes).
