State the Objective
Tell the children that they will find out who says -oo and that they will play with words that rhyme with who, such as moo, boo, coo, and shoo.

Literacy Activities
Play Who Says -oo

  • Place the picture cards (see below) on a table; explain that “shoo” is a word you say to make something go away.
  • Have the children say, “Who says -oo?”
  • Have one child come up, choose a picture card, identify it, and show it to the rest of the class.
  • Discuss what -oo sound the figure on the picture card makes (e.g., moo, boo, coo, shoo).
  • Together, say, “Who says -oo? The ____ says -oo _oo, _oo, _oo!” (e.g., Who says shoo? The person says shoo. Shoo, shoo, shoo!).

Say -oo rhyme words

  • Ask the children if sets of words rhyme (e.g., boo, new; shoo, coo; who, big; moo, pat).
  • If the words rhyme (e.g., who and moo), nod and say, "Who and moo rhyme.”
  • If the words don’t rhyme (e.g., who and dig), say, “Who and dig don’t rhyme!”

Produce and recognize -oo rhyme words

  • Remind the children of words that rhyme with who (e.g., moo, boo, coo, shoo, few, two, shoe).
  • Ask the children to think of words that rhyme with who and give suggestions (e.g., “how about boo?).

Blend and segment rhyme words

  • Segment -oo rhyme words into initial consonant + ending (e.g., b + oo) and ask, “What did I say?”.
  • Review -oo words and their sounds (e.g., The word moo has two sounds. The first sound is /m/, and the final sound is /oo/.).
  • Ask the children what sounds they hear in -oo words (e.g., shoo = sh + oo).
