Literacy Activities
Pretend to be a pig

  • Have the children pretend to be pigs while they perform the actions below.
Say: Do:
Plop! Plop the slop. Drop the slop. Plop, plop, plop. Pour the bucket of pretend slop (crumpled newspaper) into a designated feeding area. Have the children say, “Plop,” as you plop the bucket down.
Stop! Let’s hop! Hop to the slop. Have the children hop to the slop and say, “Hop to slop! Hop to slop!”
Slop, slop, slop! Eat the slop! Have the children say, “Mmm, slop!” and pretend to eat the slop like pigs.
Now, hop on top of the slop! Have the children hop on top of the slop and say, “Hop on top of slop! Hop on top of slop!”
What a mess! I’m going to mop up the slop! Have the children say, “No! Don’t mop our slop! Don’t mop our slop!”
  • Use -op target words to remind the children what they did while pretending to be pigs (e.g., they got to hop to the slop, hop and stomp on top of slop, mop up the slop).

Mop -op words

  • Spread out picture cards (see below) on the floor.
  • Tell the children that some of the words rhyme with slop and some don’t.
  • Have the children pretend to mop words that rhyme with slop.
  • Help the children read the -op words (e.g., slop, plop, drop).

Produce and recognize -op rhyming words

  • List -op words and point out the -op endings.
  • Remind the children of words that rhyme with mop (e.g., hop, slop, stop).
  • Ask the children to think of words that rhyme with mop.
  • Ask the children if two words rhyme.
  • If the words rhyme (e.g., mop and top), nod and say, "Mop and top rhyme,” but if the words don’t rhyme (e.g., mop and table), say, “Mop and table don’t rhyme!”

Blend and segment rhyme words

  • Segment -op rhyme words into initial consonant + ending (e.g., m + op) and ask, “What did I say?”.
  • Segment words into phonemes (e.g., m + o + p) and ask, “What word did I say?”
  • Review -op words and their sounds (e.g., Look at the word hop. The first sound is /h/, the final sound is /p/, and the vowel sound in the middle is /o/.).
  • Have the children say each sound with you, then say the word.
