State the Objective

Tell the children that they will store 4s in a drawer and will think of words that rhyme with store, such as door, floor, more, and bore.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Read the children a list of words that rhyme within the activity.
  • Have the children repeat the words and point out that the words sound alike, or rhyme.
  • Explain to the children that store means to put away or keep.

Store 4s in a drawer

  • Read the Store 4s in a Drawer target text (see below) to the children.
  • Give the children a box with a side cut off and let them draw 4s on it.
  • Label the box “Drawer for 4s.”
  • Have the children put 4s and forty-four 4s (see below) in the drawer and say “Store 4s in a drawer!”
  • Let the children take turns putting 4s in the drawer.

Let 4s soar

  • Have the children draw 4s on a triangular piece of paper.
  • Let the children try to make their paper land on the floor or a drawer, or hit the door.
  • Make comments in rhyme during the activity such as . . .
    • My 4s soar.
    • More 4s soar.
    • 4s on the floor.
    • 4s hit the door.
    • 4s land in a drawer.
    • Score!

Pour 4s

  • Put 4s in a pitcher or cup.
  • Let the children pour the 4s out on the floor or into a drawer.
  • Comment on words that rhyme (e.g., Store rhymes with more and pour).
  • Ask the children if the word pour rhymes with store (or door or floor or more) and provide support (e.g., nod head “yes”).

Recognize rhyming words

  • Ask the children to show you thumbs up if two words rhyme (e.g., more, door) and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme (e.g., more, boat).
  • Repeat with other sets of words.
  • Have the children take turns repeating the word pair that rhyme after you.
