State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will shout out spouts and practice saying words that rhyme with shout, such as spout, pout, and out. 

Literacy Activities
Make spouts 

• Tell the children that a spout is the opening in a bottle that lets water come out. 
• Cut the top off water bottles (about 2–3 inches below the lid) to make spouts.
• Point out how the words shout and out rhyme.

Read a rhyming text to the children

• Read the text Go Out to Shout (see below).
• Comment on words that rhyme.

Pretend to go out to shout out a spout

• Place a string or tape on the floor and pretend that one side is “in the house” and one side is “out.”
• Let a few children stand “out” and shout out their spouts.
• Have the children shout out words out of the spout: sprout, spout, scout, shout.
• Have the children pout when they are not out, since they can’t shout.
• Have the children who are in go out and the children who are out go in.
• Let the children pout when they go in and can’t shout. 

Scout out spouts

• Scatter spouts about the room.
• Let the children scout out for spouts.
• Help each child think of a word that rhymes with scout (e.g., pout, trout, shout) as they bring you the spouts.

Recognize rhyming words

• Produce two words (e.g. shout, spout; out, pout; shout, out) and ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if they do not.
• Repeat with other sets of words, such as spout, sun; sprout, shout; pig, scout; out, pout; scout, shout (support as needed).
