Practice the skill within an activity

Luck Duck

  • Read Duck, Duck, Goose! by Kristen Hall (optional).
  • Have the children sit in a circle and choose one child to be Luck Duck.
  • Tell Luck Duck to walk around the circle and tap classmates softly on the shoulder to tag them as ducks.
  • After Luck Duck tags several children as ducks, have him or her tap a child and say, “goose.”
  • Explain that when a child is tagged as “goose,” he or she must jump up and run one way while Luck Duck runs the other way to see who is the first to get back to the open spot.
    • If Luck Duck returns to the open spot before being tagged by the goose, he or she gets to keep that spot and the goose becomes the new Luck Duck.
    • If Luck Duck is tagged by the goose before getting back to the open spot, that child is stuck being Luck Duck for another round.
  • Repeat the game as many times as desired.
  • Ask the children to name words that rhyme with duck that were used in the activity (i.e., duck, stuck, luck).

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with duck
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (duck, stuck, luck).
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with duck (muck, puck, tuck, yuck, pluck).
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with duck.
    • If a child doesn’t respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
      • “How about luck?  Does duck rhyme with luck?” (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
      • “Do duck and stuck rhyme?” (Nod your head yes)
  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g. duck, tuck).
    • Ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and their thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., luck, stuck; tuck, yuck; pluck, lion; puck, hog).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the two words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.

Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words

  • March and say the sounds in words
    • Tell the children that they will practice saying words that rhyme with duck in fun ways.
    • Have the children march and say the beginning and ending sound of the word duck:
      • Segment sounds: say /d/ (march right), say /uck/ (march left)
      • Blend sounds: jump with both feet and say duck to blend the sounds into a word.
      • Repeat with other words that rhyme with duck (e.g., luck, stuck, muck, yuck, puck etc.) .
