Overview
The children will jump, bump, and thump on stumps as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with stump, such as bump, jump, and thump.
 
Practice the skill within an activity

  • Have the children tape one tree stump graphic (see below) to the floor and one to a chair.
  • Teach the children the Jump onto the Stump song (see below) and demonstrate the actions using the stump graphic.
    • Jump: jump on the stump graphic on the floor
    • Bump: bump into the chair
    • Thump: hit the stump graphic on the chair
  • Sing the song while doing the different actions with the children.
  • Repeat as desired.

Recognize rhyming words in text

  • Display the song Jump onto the Stump large enough for the children to see.
  • Read the song to the children line by line and have them jump every time they hear a word that rhymes with stump.

Produce words that rhyme with stump

  • Remind the children of the words that rhyme with stump (e.g., jump, bump, thump).
  • Ask the children to think of words that rhyme with stump (e.g., dump, lump, pump).

Activity: Jump onto the Stump

  • With your child, learn the Jump onto the Stump song.
  • Sing the song while performing the following actions with your child using the tree stump graphic:
    • Verse 1: Tape the stump graphic to the floor and jump on it.
    • Verse 2: Move the stump graphic to a chair and bump into the chair
    • Verse 3: Thump (hit) the stump graphic on the chair with your hand.
  • Help your child think of words that rhyme with stump while you write them inside the tree stump. 
  • Have your child jump every time they hear a word that rhymes with stump.
