State and Model the Objective  

Tell the children that they will jump and thump (stomp) as they listen for words that rhyme with jump, such as bump, lump, and dump.

Literacy Activities 

Jump on lumps and clumps

  • Make a mound of soft items and cover them with a blanket or sheet to create lumps and clumps and bumps.
  • Let the children jump and thump (stomp) on the lumps and clumps.
Say:  Do:

Jump, jump, jump! Jump to the lumps and clumps!

Jump to the clumps and bumps under the blanket
Jump, jump! Jump over the lumps! Jump over the lumps, bumps, and clumps! Jump over the bumps, lumps, and clumps
Thump, thump, thump!
Thump the clumps!
Stomp on the lumps and clumps 
Jump, jump, jump! Jump on the clumps and lumps! Jump on the lumps

Pump out words that rhyme 

  • Show the children a bike pump, balloon pump, hand soap pump, or picture of a pump (found below).
  • Invite the children to move their arms as if they were pumping a pump.
  • As the children make a pumping action, chant, “Pump, pump, pump. Pump rhymes with _____ (e.g., thump, jump, clump, bump, lump, dump).”

Jump if two words rhyme 

  • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g., jump, pump).
  • If the two words rhyme, have the children jump. 
  • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., dump, stump; lump, clump; hump, pump; plump, chump; bump, slump; thump, cat; rump, truck).

Thump, jump, and make words  

  • Have the children blend word parts into whole words by doing the following:
    • Thump with their right foot and say the beginning sound (e.g., b-). 
    • Thump with their left foot and say the ump ending.
    • Jump with their two feet together and say the word (e.g., bump).
  • Repeat with lump, pump, dump, clump, thump, stump.
