State the Objective
Tell the children that they will decorate a kite for the king as they recognize and name the letters K and k.
Literacy Activities
Make the king’s kite
- Write and name the letters K and k.
- Tell the children that K makes the /k/ sound.
- Show the children a picture of the king (see below), pointing out the K on his crown.
- Tell them that the king wears a K on his crown because the word king begins with the letter K.
- Let the children write the letters K and k on the kite (see below).
- Have the children write the letters K and k on the pictures of bows (see below).
- Help the children attach the bows to a string.
- Attach the string to the bottom of the kite to make a tail.
- Tell the children to fly the kite around the kingdom; let them fly the kite around the room or outside (optional).
Write the target letter
- Explain that the kind king needs a K for every kid in his kingdom.

Invite the children to write the letters K and k on small pieces of paper to give
to the kind king’s kids.
- Have the children tape the Ks on their shirts because they are the "kids of the kingdom!"
