State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will pretend to eat spaghetti in space and that they will read and write words that begin with /sp/.

Practice the skill within an activity

Pretend to eat spaghetti in space

  • Read Spaghetti in Space (see text below) as a group.
  • Let the children act out the story by dipping white yarn in red paint and placing the yarn on a paper plate (or white paper used as a pretend paper plate).
  • Have the children spread the spaghetti with a spoon and make splotches and specks on the plate with the ‘sauce’.

Spin spools in a space

  • Explain that space can mean the area beyond the earth’s atmosphere or it can mean a place on a surface.
  • Create a space on the floor in the room by marking it off with masking tape.
  • Let the children spin spools in the space.
  • Have the children place spots (dots) in the space and then let them sprinkle or spin spools and watch to see if the spools land on a spot in the space.

Apply the skill

Read target words in a text

  • Engage the children in reading Spaghetti in Space (see text below) as a group.
  • Ask the children to listen for words that begin with /sp/ as you read the text together.
  • Have the children make a list of the words that begin with /sp/.
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Repeat with the text Spin Spools on a Spot.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Give each child a paper and pencil and let them write about the art they made by spraying and sprinkling water. Have them include some of these words: space, splat, splash, splatter, splotch, speck, spray, spin, spool, spoon, spot.

Spaghetti in Space

I wish I could eat spaghetti in space.
I’d find a spot to spread out the pots and pans.
And I’d spoon up the spaghetti.
But in space spaghetti would spill and spew all over the place.
The sauce would spill and splash.
It would go splat and splash and make a splotch.
There’d be specks of spaghetti everywhere.
There’d be splotches of sauce everywhere.
The spaghetti sauce would spew all over space.
I’d have to sponge up all the spaghetti and sauce.
That would spoil my fun.

Spin Spools in a Space

Spin a spool.
Did it stop on a spot?
Did it stop in a space?
Spill spools.
Did they spill in a space?
Did they spill on a spot?
Spoon spools.
Did the spools go splat on a spot?
Did the spools go splat in a space?
Spin a spout.
Did the spout stop on a spot?
Did the spout stop in a space?
Sprinkle spools.
Did the spools stop on a spot?
Dis the spools stop in a space?
Did the spools splatter all over the place?
