Literacy Activities
Make special spools

  • Give each child a spool.
  • Tell the children that their spool is special, because they get to decorate it and make it spectacular.
  • Have they children decorate their spools with spots, sprinkles, or sparkles (glitter).
  • Have the children write a sentence about what they put on their spool (e.g., I put spots on my spool. I put sprinkles and sparkles on my spool).
  • Throughout the activity make comments such as: “Your spotted spool is splendid!” “What a spectacular spool!” “Look at the sparkles on your special spool!”

Spill the spools

  • Decorate a container beforehand with cut-out spots with space between each spot.
  • Have the children spill spools into the container and have them watch to see if the spools spill on spots or spaces.
  • Have the children write “spot” if their spool landed on a spot or “space” if it landed on a space.
  • Let the child spin the spools on spots and spaces.
  • Repeat the activity, letting the children spill and spin spools on the table or floor area set up with spots.

More Practice
Read target words in texts

  • Engage the children in reading the text Spill the Spools together as a class/group.
    • Read the text again, fading support.
    • Have the children make a list of the words beginning with the /sp/ blend.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Engage the children in interactive writing about their experience by reviewing target words and phrases from the activities.
  • Present sentence frame, sentence completion, gestural, or question prompts incorporating target words and phrases.
  • Provide verbal or written options if needed.
