State and Model the Objective

Tell the children that they will strut and stroll with streamers using words that begin with /str/.

Literacy Activities
Make streamers to stretch and stroke

  • Show the children the old piece of cloth and say you want to tear it into strips for streamers, pointing out the /str/ in strips and streamers.
  • Comment on your struggle to rip it, then snip the cloth so it is not such a struggle.
  • Let the children rip cloth into streamers and comment on needing to be strong.
  • Pull on the streamers to get rid of the loose strings and strands.
  • Let children take either side of the streamers and stretch the streamers.
  • Have the children stroke the streamers or soft strands of cloth to feel them.

Put stripes and streaks on streamers (optional)

  • With markers, chalk, or paint, put stripes on streamers.
  • Put streaks on the streamers (put water on the stripes to make streaks).

Act out various /str/ activities on the street with streamers

  • Mark off a straight street (with tape, chalk, or chairs) and let the children do the following:
    • Stand in a straight line.
    • Strut down the street with the streamer.
    • Stream a streamer as they stroll down the street.
    • Strut in a straight line.
    • Stray out of the street.
    • Straggle behind streaming a streamer.
    • Stop and stretch on the straight street.
    • Take big strides (steps) as they strut down the street.
    • Strew strings and strands along the street.
    • Comment on how strange the street looks with strands and strings strewn all over.
    • Pick up all the strings, strands and streamers from the street.

Read target words in texts

  • Engage the children in reading the Strut and Stroll Along the Street target text (see below).
  • Ask the children to listen for words with the blend /str/ as you read the text together.
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Help the children create a word wall of the /str/ words.
  • Repeat with the other texts (see below).

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • With the children’s help, create a word wall of the /str/ words from the activities.
  • Engage the children in interactive writing about their experience.
    • Example:
      • We made a _____ (street).
      • We put down _____ (strips) of tape.
      • We got to _____ (strut) and _____ (stroll) down the _____ (street). with our _____ (streamers).
      • Some _____ (straggled) behind on the street.
      • Some let the _____ (streamers) stream behind them.
      • Some stopped to _____ (stretch on the street).
      • We had fun _____ (strolling) and _____ (strutting) down the street!
  • Give the children a few strips of paper as streamers to write /str/ words on and wave as they strut and stroll around the room.

Strut and Stroll along the Street

Look! A street!
Let’s strut down the street streaming our streamers.
Stretch!
Let’s stretch as we strut down the street with streamers.
Stride!
Let’s take large steps as we stride down the street.
Stroll!
Let’s stroll down the straight street with streamers.
We can strut, stretch, stride, and stroll down the street with streamers.

Streaming Streamers

Streamers! Streamers!
Streaming streamers!
Strolling with streamers.
Stretching streamers.
Struggling to pull straggling strands and strings from streamers.
Strutting down a street with streamers.
Strolling and strutting with streaming streamers is lots of fun!

Strings and Streamers Are All Over the Street

We took a stroll down a street streaming streamers.
But the streamers had strings and strands.
And the strings and strands fell on the street.
By the end of our stroll, there were strings and strands all over the street!
We had to pick up the strings, strands, and streamers.
Now we have a street without strings, strands, or streamers.
