Literacy Activities
Swept away

  • Explain to the children that swept away means to be carried away to a place.
  • Read the text Swept Away to a Park with the children then have them act out the text using the park graphics:
    • Get swept away to a park by the wind
    • Swim and swirl in a pool like a swan
    • Swivel and swoosh on a swing
    • Swoop and swerve on rides
    • Switch and swap places
    • Get swept away back home

Read the text Swept Away to a Picnic and have the children pretend to get swept away to a picnic:

  • Sway in the breeze
  • Eat sweets
  • Swat at flies
  • Switch and swap places
  • Swoop down
  • Spread out the word cards face up on a table or floor and read the word on each card with the children.
  • Name a word from one of the cards (i.e., sweep, swoop, swirl, swerve, swing, swim, swat, swap, swan, sweet).
  • Have the children identify the correct word by swooping down to pick up the word card.
  • Allow the children to swivel and swirl the word cards through the air.

More Practice
Read target words in a text

  • Have the children underline the words with /sw/ in the text Swept Away to a Park.
  • Read the target text Swept Away to a Park to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
  • Read the Swept Away to a Park text again, fading support.
  • Repeat the supported reading process with the target text Swept Away to a Picnic.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Help the children create a word wall (or use one previously created) of words spelled with /sw/ (i.e., sweep, swoop, swirl, swerve, swing, swim, swat, swap, swan, sweet).
  • Refer the children to the word wall and have them write a sentence or two expressing ideas from a lesson activity or target text (e.g., I like to swim and swirl in a pool like a swan. I swat at flies at a swell picnic).

It’s a hot day and you might want to be swept away.

You’ll swivel on a swing and sway in the wind.
Swiftly you’ll swoosh through the air while you swing.
You’ll swoop through the air on rides in the park.
