  • swim

Materials:

  • Animal graphics
  • Swoosh and Swish target text
  • Word cards

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will swish and swoosh through the air as they read and write words that begin with /sw/.

Literacy Activities
Swish and swoosh like swans

  • Read the text Swoosh and Swish with the children.
  • Show the children the swallow, bee, swan, and monkey graphics and have the children act out the text using the graphics:
    • Swallows swerve, swoosh, swish, and swoop away.
    • A swarm of bees swirl, swoosh, and swish through the air.
    • Swans swim, swoosh, and swish through the water.
    • A swinging monkey swishes and swooshes through the trees.

Swish and swoosh word cards

  • Show the children the word cards and help the children read the word on each card.
  • Have the children choose a word card and allow them to pretend to be an animal as they act out the action on the card.
  • Help the children write action words spelled with /sw/ (i.e., swim, swat, swish, swoosh, swing, swat, swoop, sweep, swirl) on 3x5 index cards or small pieces of paper.
  • Let the children use their word cards to act out the actions on the cards (e.g., for the word swim pretend that the word card is a swan swimming through water).

More Practice
Read target words in a text

  • Have the children underline the words with /sw/ in the text Swoosh and Swish.
  • Read the text Swoosh and Swish to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you.
  • Read the Swoosh and Swish target text again, fading support.

Write about the activity using target words/patterns

  • Help the children create a word wall (or use one previously created) of words spelled with /sw/ (i.e., swallow, swan, swarm, swing, swim, swoosh, swish, swoop, swerve, swirl).
  • Refer the children to the word wall and have them write a sentence or two expressing ideas from a lesson activity or target text (e.g., I see a swan swim and swoosh away).
