State the Objective

Tell the children that they will call for a ball and read and write words that end with -ll such as ball, call, tall, wall, small, and halt.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Show the children the target words.
  • Read the words with the children.

Call for a ball

  • Read the Call for a Ball target text (see below) with the children.
  • Let the children take turns passing and calling for small balls (e.g., paper balls, cotton balls, toy balls).
  • Have the children make comments such as “I will call for the ball!” or “I caught a small ball.”
  • Tell the children that when you say “halt” they need to let their balls fall to the floor.

Make a wall

  • Read the Get the Ball over the Wall target text (see below) with the children.
  • Have some of the children stand side-by-side to make a wall.
  • Have the other children take turns trying to get a ball (e.g., paper balls, cotton balls, or soft toy balls) over the wall.
  • Place balls on the wall and tell the children making the wall not to let the balls fall.
  • Let the children stand tall to create a tall wall and then get small (e.g., kneeling) to create a small wall.

Write about the activity using target words and phrases

Let the children write short sentences using target words.

  • We can all play ____ (ball).
  • Can you stand ____ (tall)?.
  • My ball is ____ (small).
  • Get a ball over the ____ (wall).
