  • Five ping pong balls
  • Bag
  • Hit a Wall with a Ball target text*
  • Video of a pinball machine in operation (optional)

State the Objective

Tell the children that they will play with different balls and that they will read and write words with -all, such as ball, wall, call, and fall.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Show the children the target words.
  • Comment on the sound that the letter A makes when followed by the /l/  sound, as in call, fall, ball, and wall.
  • Read the words with the children.
  • Read the Small Balls target text (see below) and watch the video (optional) with the children.

Call for a ball

  • Read the Hit a Wall with a Ball target text (see below) with the children. 
  • Each time the line Call for a ball is read, allow the children to take turns taking a ping pong ball from a bag.
  • Let the children take turns bouncing a ping pong ball against a wall.

Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

  • With word-building cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing a consonant or the vowel.
    • Change the beginning consonant(s): cup → pup; hit→ lit; call → wall
    • Change the vowel: cup→ cap; hit→ hat; ball→ bill
    • Change the ending consonant: ball→ bat; hit→ hip; cup→ cut

Identify vowel sounds

  • Say target words (e.g., ball, wall, call), stretching out your arms and lengthening the vowel (e.g., Ball. b aaaa ll. Ball).
  • Ask the children what sounds they hear. 
  • Have the children to count the letters and sounds in each word.

Write words with -all from dictation

  • Read -all words with the children.
  • Ask the children to write words with -all from dictation.
