State the Objective
Tell the children that they will play with a night light and read and write words with the long i spelling pattern -igh, such as night, light, bright, right, and tonight.
Literacy Activities
Introduce target words
Read the target words with the children: light, night, might, sight, bright.
Kinds of light
- Read the The Light Is Too Bright target text (see below) with the children.
- Make a list of different sources of light (e.g., lamp light, night light, sunlight).
- Turn off the lights, shine a flashlight on the word cards (see below), and read the words with the children.
- Turn on the lights and show the children the picture cards (see below).
- Have the children label the picture cards.
Night light
- Read the I Need a Night Light target text (see below) with the children.
- Tell the children that they will decide on the right light to pretend to sleep with.
- Have the children make signs saying “Just right light” and “Too bright light.”
- Show the children each picture card and ask, “Is this light right?”
- Have the children hold up the signs to indicate if each light is just right or too bright to sleep with at night.
Write sentences using target words and phrases
Tell the children to write short sentences about the activities.
- The light was ___ (bright).

I sleep with a night ___ (light).
-
I cannot sleep ____ (tonight) without the light.
-
A night light is just ___ (right).
SEEL Target Texts
The Light is too Bright
The light is bright.
The light tonight is way too bright.
I turn off my lamp light.
I block out the street lights.
But my night light is too bright.
It is not the right amount of light.
There is still too much light.
So I turn off my night light.
Now this is the right amount of light.
Now the night is not too bright.
I can sleep tonight!
I Need a Night Light
The dark gives me a fright.
The lamp light is too bright.
A flashlight is not right.
I need a night light!
A night light is not too bright.
A night light gives the right amount of light.
A night light is just right.
I can sleep tonight if I turn on my nightlight.
