State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will make loops and read and write words with the long oo vowel, such as scoop, loop, and droop. 

Literacy Activities
Scoop up loops  

• Let the children write the word loop on strips of paper and turn the strips into loops by stapling the ends together.
• Place a loop made out of string on the floor. 
• Have the children place their paper loops in the loop of string on the floor.
• Allow the children to stoop, swoop down, and scoop up or spoon up the loops.

Make loops with words

• Let the children bend the paper strips (found below) to make -oo words and then staple the ends together.
• Have the children read the words they made by blending the word parts together. 
• Place the loops with -oop words in a hoop or loop placed on the ground.
• Allow the children to choose loops from the hoop or loop placed on the ground and have them read the word on the loop. 

Let loops droop

• Have the children write -oo words from dictation on strips of paper (e.g., scoop, stoop, loop, hoop, swoop, shoot, spoon, spook, loot, soon, boost).
• Have the children turn the strips of paper into loops.
• Let the children make a chain of loops.
• Fasten the ends of the chain together and let the loops droop.
• Hang the droopy loops.

More Practice 
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

• Let the children make -oo words with the word-building cards (found below) by changing the beginning and ending consonant(s).
  • Change the beginning consonant(s): loop→ hoop; goop→ coop; scoop→ swoop; noon→ moon.
  • Change the ending consonant(s): swoop→ swoosh→ swoon; goon→ goop.

Read target words

• Read the Let’s Make Loops target text (found below) to the children.
• Read the text again, fading support.
• Repeat the supported reading with any of the other target texts found below (e.g., Scoop up Loops, Let Loops Droop, Swoop Down to Scoop Up Loops).

Write about the activity using target words

• Display words on a word wall (e.g., loop, hoop, scoop, swoop, stoop, swoosh, spoon,  loose, choose, hooray, phooey, droop, whoosh, too, soon.)
• Have the children fill in the sentence frames (found below) with the appropriate oo words.
• Ask the children to write a sentence or two about scooping and spooning up loops, making chains of droopy loops, and having some loops get loose when they scooped them up.
