State the Objective
Tell the children that they will sing songs about spiders and associate the letter S with the /s/ sound in words such as sit, sun, sip, spider, and spin.

Literacy Activities
Sing a song

  • Write the letter S and tell the children its name and sound.
  • Have the children write S in the air with their fingers.
  • Let the children move their hands like spiders and pretend to draw spots on them.
  • Chant or sing the Spooky Spider target text (see below).
  • Let the children pretend that their hands are spinning spiders as you sing.

Search for the letter S

  • Show the children the Spooky Spider text and help them search for the letter S.
  • Touch each S in the text and have the children say the letter’s name and sound.
  • Say words that begin with S (e.g., sun, sad, saw, see, sit, sip), ask if the word begins with /s/, and nod yes.

Make spiders spin and swing

  • Let the children make a spider by drawing a circle with four legs on each side (example below).

  • Have the children write the letter S on the spider.
  • Attach a string to the spider so the children can make it swing and spin (optional).

Chant Spiders Spin and Swing

  • Chant the Spiders Spin and Swing text (see below); let the children echo the lines of the chant.
  • Allow the children to perform the song’s actions (e.g., spin, sit, stand, swim, sip, swing arms).

Blend and read S words

  • Teach the children to blend word parts, using the word sun as an example.
    • Put out one hand for the initial consonant (/s/).
    • Put out the other hand for the word ending (-un).
    • Clap and say the word, sun.
  • Have the children use the actions to blend other S words:
    • s + it
    • s + ip
    • s + at
  • Write S words (e.g., sun, sip, sit, sat) and demonstrate reading them by saying each sound as you move your finger under the word.
