State the Objective

Tell the children that they will give and get Gs as they practice saying the hard-g (/g/) sound in words that start with /g/such as gogetgive, and gone

Literacy Activities

Give G gifts

  • Show the children the letter G and explain that it makes the /g/ sound. 
  • Have the children write the letter G on small pieces of paper. 
  • Tell the children to say the /g/ sound while they write the letter.
  • Say, “Give a G and get a G. The letter G can be a great gift!”
  • Let the children give and get gifts by trading their Gs.

G is gone 

  • Show the children a G and then have them close their eyes.
  • Hide the (e.g., in a sleeve, pocket, or shoe), but leave part of it visible.
  • Have the children open their eyes and say, “G is gone!”
  • Make comments while the children look for the G:
    • “Where did G go?”
    • “Go get the G!”
    • “Is in the garbage?”
    • “I got the G!”

Gs go in the goal

  • Tell the children that the letter G goes in the goal. 
  • Read the Gifts of G text (see below) to the children. 
  • Let the children flick or toss a G in a goal (e.g., bowl, basket, garbage can) each time they hear the /g/ sound in the text. 
  • Say, “G is gone!” when a goes into the goal. 
  • Say words (e.g., goodgogumguyguess) and ask the children if they hear the /g/ sound. 

Blend /g/ words

  • Have the children practice blending an initial /g/ sound with a word ending.
  • Follow the example in the chart below:

Clap hands

  • Repeat by blending /g/ with other word endings  (e.g., -et; -ive, -one, -ood, -o).
