State the Objective
Tell the children that they will give and get Gs as they practice saying the /g/ sound in words that start with /g/, such as go, get, give, and gone.
Literacy Activities
Give G gifts
- Show the children the letter G and explain that it makes the /g/ sound.
- Have the children write upper case G and lower case g on small pieces of paper and ask them to say the /g/ sound.
- Say, “Give a G and get a G. The letter G can be a great gift!”
- Let the children give and get gifts by trading their Gs.
- Read the Gifts of G text (see below) to and with the children.
G is gone
- Show the children a G and then have them close their eyes.
- Hide the G (e.g., in a sleeve, pocket, or shoe), but leave part of it visible.
- Have the children open their eyes and say, “G is gone!”
- Make comments while the children look for the G:
- “Where did G go?”
- “Go get the G!”
- “Is G in the garbage?”
- “I got the G!”
Set a goal to get Gs in the garbage
- Tell the children that the goal is to get the letter G in a garbage bag (can, bowl, or basket).
- Let the children flick or toss a G or g in the garbage as they say the /g/ sound.
- Say, “ We got G in the garbage! We got our goal!” when a G goes into the goal.
- Write the words good, go, gum, guy, and got and ask the children if they hear the /g/ sound at the beginning of the words.
- Let the children say the words, point to the letter G, and toss each word in the goal.
Blend /g/ words
- Have the children practice blending an initial /g/ sound with a word ending:
-
Follow the example in the chart below:
Say Do /g/ Put out one hand -ot Put out the other hand got Clap hands - Repeat by blending /g/ with other word endings (e.g., -et; -ive, -one, -ood, -o).
