  • Pieces of paper
  • Drawing of a violet*
  • Drawing of a vine*
  • A Vase with Vines and Violets target text*
  • Cup or vase (optional)

State the Objective

Tell the children that they will make a V vase very full as they listen for words that start with the /v/ sound, such as violetvine, and visit

Literacy Activities

  • Write a V and explain that it makes the /v/ sound. 
  • Have the children write a V in the air while saying /v/. 
  • Have the children write Vs on pieces of paper.  
  • Show the children a cup or have them make a V shape with their hands; have them pretend it is a vase.
  • Have the children fill the pretend vase with Vs and make comments:
    • Vase of Vs!
    • Very full vase!
    • A vase for violets?
    • A vase for vines?
    • A vase for violets and vines!

Visit with a vase

  • Tell the children that they will fill a vase with vines and violets for a very good friend. 
  • Let the children make a V-shaped vase with their hands or use a cup as a vase.
  • Put drawings of vines and violets (see below) in the pretend vase.
  • Let the children visit a friend and show the V vase with violets, vines, and Vs.
  • Make comments using /v/ words:
    • Vines and violets in a vase!
    • A vase of vines and violets for a visit to a very good friend. 
    • Put Vs and violets and vines in the vase.
    • Vegetables, a vest, or a van do not go in the vase.

Read A Vase with Vines and Violets 

  • Display the A Vase with Vines and Violets target text (see below).
  • Read the text to the children
  • Have the children find the Vs in the text.
  • Draw a vase (see below) and have the children add vines, violets, and Vs. 

Put Vs and /v/ words in a vase

  • Write Vs and /v/ words (e.g., vanvasevestvolcanovacuumvery) on small pieces of paper.
  • Let the children pick a V or /v/ word.
  • Have the children say /v/ while they put Vs and /v/ words in the pretend vase.
  • Comment on how the vase is getting very full of Vs and /v/ words like vinevan, and volcano.
