Lost Luggage

Objective

Associate the uppercase letter L (and lowercase l) with the /l/ sound (e.g., lost, lane, lamp).

Materials:

  • Long lane on the floor
  • Picture cards (placed along the long lane)
  • Letter cards (see below)
  • Large letter cards (see below)
  • Luke (see below)
  • Luke’s Lost Luggage text (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children they will help Luke find his lost luggage and find lost L letters as they practice writing the letter L (and lowercase l) and saying the /l/ sound in words such as letter, leaf, and luggage.

Practice the skill within an activity

Look for lost Ls

  • Hide the L (and lowercase l) letter cards around the room.
  • Invite the children to look for Ls, while saying the /l/ sound.
  • When they find an L, comment that L makes the /l/ sound.

Look for lost luggage

  • Make a long lane on the floor using L letters made from paper or masking tape.
  • Place pictures cards of words that start with L (see below) along the lane.
  • Cut out the luggage (see below), fold in the middle, cut a slit along the line on one side, then staple/glue the edges together.
  • Show children the picture of Luke and tell them that he lost items from his luggage (explain that luggage is a suitcase) along a lane (explain that lane is a road).
  • Take turns walking along the long lane to find one of Luke’s lost items from his luggage.
  • When an item is found, have the child name the item for the class. Repeat the name of the item, emphasizing the /l/ sound at the beginning of the word.
  • Have the children put the items back in the luggage by placing the pictures through the slit.

Apply the skill (choose from the following)

Read target words in a text (see below)

  • Read the text Luke’s Lost Luggage to the children.
  • Have the children find and circle the letter L throughout the story, saying the /l/ sound each time they circle the letter L.
  • Read the text again and have the children make an L with their fingers every time they hear a word that starts with the /l/ sound.

Leap to the L

  • Place three different letters on the ground (see letter cards below).
  • Ask the children to leap to the letter that makes the /l/ sound.
  • Have the children say the /l/ sound when they land on the letter L.
  • Decorate Luke’s luggage with Ls.
  • Glue the letter cards on the front of Luke’s luggage.
  • Write the letter L (and lowercase l) on the back of the luggage.

Luke's Lost Luggage

Luke put a lemon, a letter, a lollipop, a leaf, a lamp, a lock, a ladybug, and some licorice in his luggage.
Luke picked up his luggage as he left for a large lake.
Luke walked down a long lane toward the large lake.
Luke lost the things from his luggage as he walked down the long lane.
Luke looked and looked along the lane to find the lost luggage.
Luke found the lost lemon, letter, lollipop, leaf, lamp, lock, ladybug, and licorice.
Luke put the lost things in his luggage and locked his luggage so he would not lose his things again.

Objective

Materials

Activity: Luke's Lost Luggage

  • Ask your child if he or she remembers what letter makes the /l/ sound. Provide assistance if necessary.
  • Take turns hiding the picture cards of items from Luke's luggage around the room, pretending they are lost.
  • Have the other person try to find the missing items to put back in Luke's luggage, saying the name of each item as it is put back, (e.g.; "I put the lost lollipop in Luke's luggage.").
  • Decorate Luke's luggage with the letters L and l
  • Help your child write a list of some items he or she found that start with the letter L. Read the list together and have your child circle the L in each word.
  • The activity can be repeated several times.
