Associate the letters sp with the /sp/ sounds (e.g., spout, spider, spool).
- Things to spin: spools (empty or old thread spools), spoons (can draw a picture of a ghost or ‘spook’ on plastic spoons with magic marker), spouts (top part of plastic water or soda bottle, cut off so there are no sharp edges)
- Spray bottle and a bowl with a small amount of water
- Spots (see graphics below)
- Letter cards (see below)
- Spin Spools text (see below)
State and model the objective
Tell the children they will spin spools while they practice saying the /sp/ sounds in words such as spool, splash, and spin.
Practice the skill within an activity
Spin spools on spots
- Spread out the spots on a table or on the floor.
- Let the children spin the spools, spouts, and spoons. Have them watch to see if they land on a spot.
- Repeat the activity using sp word cards (see below). When an object lands on a word card, help them read the word.
- Have the children underline the letters sp in each word and have them say the /sp/ sounds each time they underline the letters.
Splash with a spool
- Have the children drop spools in bowl with small amount of water so spools can splat and splatter.
- Let the children spray, splash, and splatter spools with water.
- Have the children spray, splash, and splatter sp letter cards (see below) and have them say the /sp/ sounds each time they get a splotch of water on a letter card.
Apply the skill (choose from the following)
Read target words in a text
- Read the text Spin Spools to the children.
- Have the children find and circle the letters sp throughout the text, saying the /sp/ sounds each time they circle the letters.
- Read the text again and support the children in reading the text (have the children read the /sp/ sounds while you read the rest).
Write the target letter
- Give the children a marker and have them write the letters sp on the things to spin (i.e., spools, spouts, spoons) and on the spots.
