Literacy Activities
Take a trip to Texas

  • Set up a tent (or place a sheet over a table) and attach the Tent in Texas sign.
  • Tell the children that they will board a train to a tent in Texas and they need to bring along some objects that start with the letter T to put in the tent.
  • Place the T and non-T objects or picture cards on a table far away from the tent.
  • Help the children sort through the objects or picture cards to identify words that begin with the /t/ sound.
    • If the object or picture begins with the /t/ sound, have the children tuck it away in a pocket.
    • If the object or picture does not begin with the /t/ sound, have the children toss it aside.
  • After they have collected the objects, tell the children that they will board a train powered by the /t/ sound.
    • Explain that the children must draw a T in the air to start the train and then say the /t/ sound to drive the train.
    • Have the children form a line behind you and follow you around the classroom, making the /t/ sound until arriving at the tent in Texas.
  • Once the children arrive, have them put their T objects or pictures in the tent.
  • Let the children sit in the tent and eat tasty treats (optional).

More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Give the children a piece of paper and have them fold it in half to look like a tent.

  • Read the Take a Train Trip target text to the children.
  • Have the children circle every uppercase letter T and lowercase letterin the text.
