State the Objective

Tell the children that they will make a hat shop and that they will read and write short-vowel words, such as hat, dog, cat, cap, and shop.

Literacy Activities

Introduce target words

  • Show the children the short-vowel target words.
  • Read the words with the children.

Make a paper hat

  • Read A Hat Shop for Cats and Dogs target text (see below) with the children.
  • Show the How to Make a Paper Hat video, by wikiHow (optional), and help the children make paper hats.
  • Have the children label their hats using target words (e.g., Dog Hat, Cat Cap).

Make a hat shop sign

  • Help the children write hat shop signs (e.g., Cat Hat Shop, Hats for Dogs, Caps and Hats for Sale).
  • Have the children read each other’s signs.
  • Have the children pretend to buy hats from each other.

Write sentences using target words and phrases

  • Tell the children to write short sentences using target words.
    • We made a hat  ____ (shop).
    • The shop was for cats and  ____ (dogs).
    • The hats and ____ (caps) have snaps, flaps, and straps.
    • Wrap up a cap for the ____ (cat).
