Materials:

  • Paper to be a placemat or box be a table
  • Snacks
  • Can Mom, Dad, Kids, and Pets Fit? target text*
  • Can Lots of Kids Fit? target text*

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will see if the family fits as they try to sit at a table and read a text that focuses on short vowel words such as Dad, Mom, kid, pet, sit, and fit.

Literacy Activities
See if the family fits 

  • Set out a piece of paper be a placemat or a box be a table
  • Have the children make name tags for Dad, Mom, kids, and pets (i.e., cats and dogs)
  • Have each child choose a name tag to put on.
  • Invite the family and pets (the children) to come in and sit a bit and see if they fit.
  • Try to fit around the table. Make comments such as the following: 
    • Sit a bit.
    • Can Mom fit?
    • Can Dad fit? 
    • Can they all sit a bit? 
  • Let the children get a snack.

Mom sits.
Even the pets come to sit a bit to get a snack.
 
Do they fit?
Let’s fit in mom, dad, the kids, and the pets.
We all fit!
Yum!  We get to eat a snack.
