State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will make and play with rags and that they will read and write short-a and short-i words, such as rag, bag, big, fit, rip, snip, and strip.

Literacy Activities
Read target texts together

  • Read the A Big Bag for Rags target text (see below) with the children.
  • Read the Dust with Rags target text (see below) with the children.

Make a rag bag

  • Read the A Big Bag for Rags target text (see below) with the children.
  • Have the children follow the instructions in the text.
    • Snip and rip an old cloth into rags.
    • Try to fit the rags in a little bag.
    • Move the rags to a bigger bag.
    • Write Rag Bag on a paper tag and attach it to the bag.
    • Pretend to dust with the rags.

Fill in the missing words

  • Pantomime the actions in parentheses and let the children take turns filling in the blanks.

  • Ask the children what is similar about the words.

  • Say the words while extending the vowel and ask the children what vowel sound they hear in the words.
