  • Spin Tops target text*
  • Set up a Top Shop target text*
  • Shop for Shells or Tops? target text*
  • Play money (optional)

State the Objective 
Tell the children that they will set up shops and that they will read and write short-vowel words, such as top, set, shop, spin, sell, stop, and shell

Literacy Activities 
Introduce the target pattern

  • Display a list of short-vowel target words (e.g., top, set, shop, spin, sell, stop, shell).
  • Read the words with the children.

Spin tops

  • Read the Spin Tops target text (see below) with the children.
  • Explain that a top can be a toy or the cap from a bottle and that both can spin.
  • Let the children spin tops.

Set up a top shop and sell tops

  • Read the Set up a Top Shop target text (see below) with the children.
  • Have the children make shop signs (e.g., Top Shop, I sell tops, Get tops) and put tops in the makeshift shop.
  • Tell the children to skip to the top shop.
  • Have the children read the Spin Tops text target (see below) and try out the tops at the top shop.
  • Let the children write about tops (e.g., Tip a top to spin a top; This big top can spin; This is a top to tip and spin).

Skip to a shell shop

  • Read the Shop for Shells or Tops? target text (see below) with the children.
  • Have the children make signs for the shell shop (e.g., Get shells at this shop; A Shell and Bell Shop; We sell shells and bells).
  • Let the children read the shell shop signs, skip to the top shop, and pretend to buy tops.

Identify similar vowels

  • Show the children short-o words, such as top, shop, stop, and lot.
  • Ask the children what is similar about the words.
  • Repeat with short-e words, such as sell, shell, and let.

Or tap the top to get it to stop.
