State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will write with 10 pens and learn to read words with the short-e sound such as pen, get, let, ten, set.

Literacy Activities
Read and act out the Let Ten Pens Write a 10 text

  • Read the Let Ten Pens Write a 10 target text (see below) with the children, fading support.
  • Repeat, fading support.
  • Have the children take turns trying to write with 10 pens.
  • Let the children see if they can write the number 10 with all ten pens.
  • Ask the children to write short-e words with ten pens (e.g., ten, bed, web, wet, pen, let, get, set).
  • Have the children draw a bed and a web with 10 pens.

Build words that have the short-e sound

  • Cut the word-building cards (see below) along dotted lines.
  • Have the children choose an initial letter, produce the sound, and slide the letter toward the ending.
  • Say, “P says /p/.” Slide the letter toward -en, and have children repeat p-en.
  • Continue with other beginning letters.
