State and Model the Objective
Tell the children they will pretend to be men named Ben and Ken while reading and writing words ending in en such as men, ten, and pen.
Literacy Activities
Read text together

  • Read Ten Men Named Ben and Ken target text (see below) with children, fading support.
  • Have the children use their fingers to spell Ken and Ben in the air.
  • Point to children as you read about putting tags on, until you have 10 children standing.
  • After reading the end of the text, have the children count how many Kens and Bens are standing.

Write words that end in en

  • Have each child trace the letters on each word card with a pen.
  • Say one of the words aloud, and have the children hold up the word that matches (Ken, Ben, ten, men, pen).
  • Have the children read the word on the card, using their finger to point at each sound (p-e-n, B-e-n).
