Fill a Sock
Read and write words ending in –ock.
- Sock (real or paper)—1 for each child
- –ock Picture/Word Cards (see below)
- –ock Block (see below)—1 for each group of children
- Sock (have –ock pictures already inside)
- Word blending cards (see below)
- Paper and pencil—1 for each child
State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will each get a sock to fill as they read and write words ending in –ock: block, rock, lock, clock.
Practice the skill within an activity
Roll the block and fill the sock
- Divide the children into small groups to play the Fill a Sock game.
- Have the children take turns rolling the block, and have them read the word on the block and find the corresponding picture to put in their sock.
- As the children drop the correct picture into the sock, they will say, “I rolled the block and got a _ock for my sock!”
- If the block lands on the side that says, “Tick-tock! You lost a __ck!” the player must take a picture out of his or her sock and say, “I lost the _ock in my sock.”
- Repeat several times.
- When time is up, have the children count the –ock pictures in their socks. The person with the most pictures is the winner.
Apply the skill
Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds
- With word blending cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing either of the consonants or the vowel:
- sock → flock; clock → block; lock → rock
- sock → sack; clock → cluck; lock → lick
- lock → lot; flock → floss; rock → rod
Read and write target words
- Pull pictures out of the sock. Write each word on the board. Read the words together.
- Have each child write a list of the –ock words that were in his or her sock. Allow the children to read their lists to each other.

Read and write words ending in -ock.
- -ock Picture/Word Cards (see below) cut out
- -ock Block (see below)
- 2 socks
Activity: Fill a Sock
- Take turns rolling the -ock block. Read the word you landed on and find the corresponding picture to put in your sock. As you drop the picture into the sock, say, "I rolled the block and got a _ock for my sock!"
- If you land on the side that says, "Tick-tock! You lost a _ock!," take a picture out of your sock and say, "I lost the __ock in my sock."
- Repeat several times until all of the pictures are taken.
- Count your -ock pictures. The person with the most pictures wins.
- Help your child write a list of the -ock pictures he or she won. Read the list together.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
