State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will have an adventure with Dog, Frog, and Hog, and read and write words that end in -og  such as log, hog, jog, and bog.

Practice the Skill within an activity

  • Before the activity, attach the Dog, Frog, and Hog puppet graphics (see below) to the popsicle sticks.
  • Select three children to act out the parts of Dog, Frog, and Hog, give the children the puppets, and have each of them read the -og word on the puppet.
  • Tell the story Dog, Frog, and Hog on a Log (see below) and have the children act it out using chairs as a log.
  • Tell the story as many times as desired, choosing different children to act out the parts, and adding different -og words each time.

Apply the Skill
Read target words in a text

  • Display the Dog, Frog, and Hog on a Log target text large enough for the children to see.
  • Read the target text to the children.
  • Engage the children in reading the text simultaneously with you (support as needed).
  • Read the text with the children again, fading support.
  • Have the children take turns underlining the words that end in -og.
  • Repeat with the  A Log in a Bog target text.

Practice writing target words

  • With the children’s help, create a word wall of the -og words from the activity and add other words that end in -og to the list.
  • Have the children write an -og word on a small piece of paper, then take the paper and read it to you as they do one of the -og actions (jog, clog, jump over a log).
  • Repeat writing a word and doing an action until they have written three different words and done all three actions.

Dog, Frog, and Hog on a Log

Dog, Frog, and Hog are best friends.
One day, as they were walking, they saw a log.
Dog wanted to sit on the log. So Dog sat on the log.
Then Frog came along. Will Frog fit on the log?
Frog sat on the log with Dog.
Finally, Hog came along. Will Hog fit on the log?
Hog sat on the log with Dog and Frog.
Look! It’s a dog-frog-hog log!
Until….SNAP!
Dog, Frog, and Hog broke the log!
Down went Dog.
Down went Frog.
Down went Hog.
Too many animals on a log!

A Log in a Bog

This is a log.
The log is in a bog.
Who wants to sit on the log?
How about a dog?
Dog, jog to the log.
How about a frog?
Frog, jog to the log.
Can we fit a hog?
Hog, jog to the log.
Uh oh!
A dog, frog, and hog cannot fit on the log.
Splash!

Would you like to sit on the log in the bog?
