Tell the children they will read a story about a pirate which will focus on words with short e, such as beg, peg, let, net.

Literacy Activities
Read target words in a text

• Read The Pirate Has a Peg Leg target text (see below) in a pirate voice, saying “ARRRRR” at the end of each line.
• Read the text with the children and fade support.

Identify and count sounds in short-e words

• Read short-e words with the children: 
  • bet, get, leg, deck, wet, set, peg, red, bed
• Have the children hop on one foot, as if they had a peg leg, once for each sound in the word (e.g., p + e + g→peg).

Write and create words with short-e sound

• Have the children write short e words from dictation (bet, beg, get, let, leg, net, peg, beg, red, led, bed, fed, pet, hen, pen, den, ten) 
• Let children create words using word segment cards (see below).
