State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will play with a pretend cat and read and write words with short vowel sounds, such as cat, sit, and run.
Literacy Activities
Read and enact texts together
- Engage the children in reading My Cat Sits and Naps on my Lap target text (see below).
- Have the children act out the text, taking turns moving a cat from a mat to their lap.
Write from dictation
- Give the children paper mats to write on.
- Have the children write words from the lesson on their mats (e.g., cat, mat, sit, nap, lap).
Sort words with same rime ending
- Have the children sort word cards (see below) into categories according to vowels.
